Plans to introduce trams, river buses and cable cars in Tyneside - project
Orpheus - has taken a step towards reality.
According to Tyne and Wear Metro operator Nexus, the new services should
be finalised by 2003 now that a team of consultants have been given the
task of producing a detailed proposal for the government to consider.
The project will see a cable car on Gateshead quayside and trams on the
streets of Newcastle.
The new tramcars will run on normal roads but will also utilise the existing
Metro tracks.
